About the event

Our 2nd symphonic series concert of the season features two of history's greatest composers, Johannes Brahms and Antonin Dvorak, who are connected in more ways than you may think. Brahms was one of Dvorak's musical mentors, and they remained connected throughout their lives. Brahms was a supportive and encouraging mentor to Dvořák, offering guidance and advice on his compositions. He was particularly impressed with Dvořák’s natural musical talent and encouraged him to continue developing a unique style of his own. Brahms certainly had his own very unique style of music, and his encouragement and mentorship certainly helped Dvorak develop his own style of music. Both composers are celebrated for good reason.

Dvorak's tone poem - In Nature's Realm paints a beatiful picture of the Czech countryside. Dvorak took much inspiration for the work from his time at his home in Vysoka in rural Bohemia, where he was constantly surrounded by the sounds of nature and nothing else. Hear the birds sing, the wind whistle, and immerse yourself in the stunning beauty of nature portrayed through music. Brahms' 2nd symphony is a tale of two stories, the despair of a sorrowful soul and the triumphant and joyous nature of overcoming that sorrow. Brahms is able to potray human emotion through music superbly. You'll witness the sun emerge from the clouds during this true musical masterpiece. During this concert, the Overland Park Orchestra will also honor our Youth Solo Competition winner by playing one of the many great concertos from throughout history. You'll be taken on a ride through human emotion, the power of the human spirit, and the tranquil elegance of nature. We hope to see you there!
